School of Shipping Economics and Trade

I. Overview

School of Shipping Economics and Trade is one of the schools with a long history and a large number of students in Guangzhou Maritime University dating back to 1986 when the water transport accounting major was founded. For a long time, relying on the characteristics and advantages of the university, based in Guangzhou and facing south China, the school has closely met the needs of local economy and industry development, highlighted the characteristics of shipping economic management, and paid attention to the coordinated development of scale and quality.Characteristic  education is a complement to basic education, and talent training, scientific research and social services promote each other. The school committed to cultivating high-quality economic management talents with "Chinese feelings, local characteristics, international vision and innovative consciousness", and providing intellectual support for government decision-making at all levels and enterprise management in various industries.

The school now consists of the Department of International Business, The Department of Finance and Accounting, the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Finance, with four undergraduate majors: International Business, Finance, Financial Management and Cross-Border Electronic Business. The school now has 51 full-time teachers, including 1 “outstanding teacher in Southern Guangdong”, 1 university-level famous teacher and 1 university-level moral model. The school  has 7 professional laboratories with a total area of 914 square meters. 16 off-campus practice bases, including one provincial college students practice teaching base; One key discipline, one key major, one key humanities and social science base, and two research centers.

II. Bachelor degree

There are currently four undergraduate majors, namely International Business, Financial Management, Finance and Cross-border e-commerce.

(1) International Business

This speciality is aim to develop the students in all-round way including the morality, intelligence, physical health, art and labor with good cultural accomplishment and a high degree of social responsibility, with international vision, native feelings, innovation consciousness and team spirit, with basic knowledge and theory of applied economics, business management and international commercial law. Be provided with proficient business English application ability and international business communication skills, as well as the basic ability to engage in foreign trade and shipping brokerage business, and other applied senior professional talents for the work in government departments, foreign economic and trade enterprises, international shipping enterprises, multinational companies.

The graduates are mainly engaged in government departments, foreign trade enterprises, international shipping enterprises and multinational corporations related to business management, international trade and international shipping brokerage.

(2) Finance

This speciality is aim to develop the students in all-round way including the morality, intelligence, physical health, art and labor with a passion for the motherland and the socialist system, with sound personality and good psychological quality, with innovation consciousness and ability, as well as the professional knowledge and related skills of Finance, Shipping and Logistics and the ability for further study in scientific institution in China or abroad. To become senior application-oriented professionals engaged in enterprises and government agencies related to financial institutions, international shipping, logistics and others.

The graduates are mainly engaged in financial management, investment and financing, financial risk management and shipping financial services in government financial management departments, financial institutions and their shipping finance departments, and financial departments of port and shipping enterprises.

(3) Financial Management

This speciality is aim to develop the students in all-round way including the morality, intelligence, physical health, art and labor with humanistic quality, scientific spirit and integrity, with systematic knowledge of economics, finance, financial management and accounting theories, as well as the ability to organize financial activities and deal with financial relations. To become senior application-oriented professionals engaged in financial budget and control, capital management, accounting processing, investment, financing and other works in public institutions and government departments.

Graduates can be engaged in accounting and financial management in government departments, enterprises and public institutions, especially port and shipping enterprises. Engaged in auditing, asset appraisal, management consulting and other work in intermediary institutions such as accounting firms and audit firms; Engaged in financial analysis, investment analysis, capital operation and other work in banks, investment companies, securities companies and other financial institutions.

(4) Cross-border e-commerce

This speciality is aim to develop the students in all-round way including the morality, intelligence, physical health, art and labor with good cultural accomplishment and a high degree of social responsibility, with innovation consciousness, entrepreneurship spirit, and international vision, grasping basic knowledge and theory of management, e-commerce, international trade and other fields and comprehensive skills of modern e-commerce and cross-border e-commerce. To become senior application-oriented professionals engaged in business management, platform operation, network marketing, data processing and other works in cross-border e-commerce enterprises, foreign trade enterprises and relevant government departments, enterprises and institutions.

Graduates mainly work in cross-border e-commerce enterprises, foreign trade enterprises and relevant government departments, enterprises and public institutions, engaged in e-commerce management, platform operation, network marketing, data processing and other jobs.

III. Faculty

(1)Leaders of the School

Chen Shaoping, the secretary of the school party committee of CPC ,takes all of events of the party branch, for instance, the party building, the ideology, the safety and stability, the cadres management, the propaganda, the united front, construction of  a clean and honest administration.

Tang Song Yuan, the dean of the school ,presides over the administrative tasks of the school, including the planning and construction, the discipline development, the talent introduction, the human resource, the finance and so on.

Guo Tao, the vice dean of the school, assists the dean to complete the teaching management, the training programs, the textbook publishing, the curriculum construction, the teaching research and reform, the teaching evaluation and supervision, the asset management, the discipline competition, the website construction, the international cooperation.

Wang Zhili, the vice dean of the school, assists the dean to manage the scientific research, the social services, the continuing education, the laboratory construction and management, the platform construction, the base construction outside, the research cooperation with the industry, the graduate education.

Xiong Qi, the vice secretary of the school party committee of CPC ,assists the secretary to manage the students, the employment, the enrollment, the Communist Youth League and the alumni events.

(2) Teachers of the School

Our school includes 57 faculty members, for instance, 51 full-time teachers, 4 professors, 12 associate professors, 4 tutors of the master, 24 teachers with practical ability. Additionally, 16 doctors, and more than 88.2% master's degree. Some teachers have been employed as consulting experts by the local government .

IV. Facilities

The school owns 7 specialized Laboratories, for instance, Entrepreneurship Laboratory, International Business Laboratory, Enterprise Resource Planning Laboratory, and so on. The laboratories cover 914 square meters, and the total value is RMB 4.57 million. Additionally, the school actively cooperates with the companies, and has built 16 practice bases outside school; especially, one of them is the Provincial Base for College Students.

V. Academics&Scientific Research

The school owns 2 scientific research centers built by Guangzhou Maritime University. The research teams serve for the shipping business, and give professional suggestions for the local economy growth and industrial companies development. Additionally, some teachers are local CPPCC members,and completed more than 10 proposals and research reports on education, economy and technology. Certainly, some proposals were adopted by the central and local governments , and had a good social impact.

VI. International Cooperation

The school insists on developing the education by cooperating with the international universities, for instance, World Maritime University, University of Rzeszów. So that the teachers can easily visit the famous international school and improve the academic level, and the students have more chance studying in the international universities. Two teachers one by one taught at University of Rzeszów for one week in 2018 and 2019.Some international expects visited our school and contributed more than 10 academic lectures. Four students join in the Sino-German Class, and two study in Italy as an exchange student. Finally, the school officially launched the "3+2" program for Master of finance by China-Australia in 2020.
