School of Navigation


I. Overview

The School of Navigation presently offers three undergraduate degree programs focusing on Marine Navigation, Maritime Affairs and Law (maritime law direction). There are five teaching research offices (Navigation, Maritime Affairs, Seamanship, Marine Communications and Maritime Law), an experiment center as well as three research institutions including Ship Motion and Control Engineering Technology Research Center, Maritime Law Research Center and Guangdong Maritime Research Center.

There are 61 faculty members in the School of Navigation, including 50 full-time teachers. Among full-time teachers, there are 2 professors, accounting for 4.0%; 18 associate professors, accounting for 36.0%; 40 double-division personnel, accounting for 80%; 6 masters certificate holders including 2 senior captains. There are 2 part-time professors, 3 part-time associate professors and lecturers and 22 external teachers. There are 1344 students at school.

The Navigation Experiment Center is the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Guangdong Province, with 18 laboratories including the international advanced navigation simulation laboratory and the ship dynamic positioning laboratory. The School of Navigation has jointly built 6 key practical teaching bases with COSCO Shipping bulk cargo transportation Co., Ltd., the world's largest dry bulk cargo company, Guangdong Maritime Bureau, Guangzhou Port Group and Guangzhou Maritime Court. The School of Navigation and maritime enterprises jointly build 4 practice ships of more than 50000 tons.

The Marine Navigation of our school has been approved as the provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction site in Guangdong Province in 2020.  The "Reform, Innovation and Practice of the Training Mode of Advanced Seafarers Based on International Standards" has won the second prize of national teaching achievement.  Our teachers have completed successfully the research project "Research and Application of Water Traffic Safety Management Methods and Technologies in the Pearl River Estuary", which won the first prize of the 2020 Science and Technology Progress Award of the Chinese Society of Navigation.

II. Programs

1. Marine Navigation

Educational Objectives

The graduates of this program are expected to have a systematic and professional navigation theory knowledge, possess strong practical abilities with creative thinking, as well as a highly comprehensive quality, which meet the requirements of relevant international maritime conventions and the seafarer’s competency standards of China. Meanwhile, they are the talents required in the shipping field in navigation and ship management.

Academic courses: Navigation, Ship maneuvering and equipment, Ship collision avoidance and watchkeeping, Ship structure and cargo shipping, Marine meteorology and oceanography, ship management, Aids to navigation, Marine radar, GMDSS and simulation communication, Shipping business, Maritime law, Maritime English, Ship principles, Seaman craft etc.

Experimental courses: voyage plan, operation of aids to navigation, cargo stowage plan and cargo securing, maritime English communications, radar operation and application, BRM, Electronic Chart display and Information System etc.

Career orientation

The graduates are mainly engaged in ship navigation, marine pilotage, ship management, cargo transportation management, maritime management, ship agency and other positions in the field of sea transportation. They can also be engaged in related work in port authority, rescue bureau, salvage bureau, fairway bureau, oceanographic bureau, maritime safety administration, border defense bureau, customs etc.

Physical requirements

Applicants of this program are required to have a height of 1.65 meters and above, regular features, no stuttering, normal color vision; naked visual acuity of both eyes is 4.7 and above, and the corrected visual acuity is 4.9 and above, normal hearing, free from infectious diseases and other diseases unsuitable for sea service. Female applicants are suggested to have due consideration prior to the application of this program taking into account the nature of working on board ship.

2. Maritime Affairs

Educational Objectives

The graduates of this program are equipped with a broad scale of basic knowledge of modern management theory, shipping and maritime business, safety management so as to meet the needs of international economic globalization and marine economic development strategy. They are with good professional dedication, sense of social responsibility, global vision, marine awareness and professional integrity and capable of being engaged in water safety management, marine pollution prevention management, maritime business management, port and navigation safety management, water area administration and other related work.

The graduates are mainly engaged in the water traffic safety administration, marine pollution prevention, maritime safety guarantee center, maritime affairs, maritime emergency, port business and maritime legal business etc. They can also be engaged in related work in maritime safety administration, coast guard, port authority, salvage bureau, port groups etc.

3. Law( Maritime Law)

Educational Objectives

The graduates of this program are expected to master systematic legal knowledge, professional maritime knowledge and maritime law. They are active in innovation thinking and adaptable to the development needs of the international shipping and trade.

Career orientation

The graduates are mainly engaged in the judicial system, civil servants, law firms and other legal service units, port and shipping enterprises, trading companies, financial and insurance institutions and other units.

III. Faculty

Tang Qiangrong, vice president of the University and dean of School of Navigation, male, born in 1967, professor, doctor degree, chief officer; Leader of the key discipline of Transportation Engineering; standing director of the sixth session of China Transportation Education Council, director of the ninth session of China Navigation Council, member and secretary general of the Teaching Steering Committee of Transportation in Guangdong Universities from 2019 to 2023; mainly studies maritime safety theory and safeguard technology as well as shipping industry management. He has presided over more than 30 research projects such as the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, the philosophy and social science project of Guangdong Province, and the science and technology project of the Department of Transportation and has published more than 40 papers. Research fields: maritime safety science and shipping & port economics

Main courses taught: Maritime English, cargo shipping etc.

Shi Bin, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Navigation, male, born in 1962, professor of port, coastal and offshore engineering, senior engineer of port and channel.

He has been engaged in the teaching of port, channel and coastal engineering. He has participated in the construction technology and construction management of Macao Friendship Bridge and developed the construction scheme of many domestic terminals and bridge engineering projects. He has published three professional textbooks, presided over 2 laboratories co-built by the central and local governments, one key program construction, and one provincial college students off-campus practice teaching base construction. He has won the honor of university-level outstanding teacher and the most popular teacher among students. He has been engaged in the material and construction technology research of terminals and bridge engineering, research of terminal structure inspection, coastal wave and fishing port planning, and has published more than 20 academic papers.

Main courses taught: Pile foundation engineering, water transportation engineering construction, engineering management, etc.

Liu Chuanrun, associate professor, graduated from Dalian Maritime University, majored in Ship Communications and Navigation, master degree obtained from South China University of Technology. He is mainly engaged in the teaching and research of ship communications and navigation, presided over or participated in eight laboratory projects jointly built by central and local universities;   Hosted or participated in 3 provincial research projects; Presided over a university-level excellent course and won a university-level teaching achievement first prize; He has published many academic papers and applied for a software copyright.

Main courses taught: GMDSS communications, navigation instruments.

Zhang Min, graduated from the Law School of Dalian Maritime University in 2012 with a doctorate in international law (maritime law). Associate professor and leader of law major in our school. To undertake thematic academic activities projects supported by the National Social Science Fund in 2021, and to undertake 5 provincial and ministerial research projects successively. The research fields are logistics law, maritime law, shipping science and technology law, etc., publishing 3 books, such as monographs, chief editors and teaching materials, and publishing more than 10 high-level academic papers. She has undertaken a number of academic part-time jobs in South China and served as a speaker at more than 10 high-level academic conferences.

Lin Shaodong (1981-), male, has a national occupation guide certification, occupation guide of Guangdong Province, deputy secretary of the Party committee of  HaiYun Institution in the Guang Zhou Maritime, postgraduate, assistant professorpresided over six provincial and municipal school-class topics, participated in 27 crosswise tasks, published 17 papers, and won the provincial "advanced individual" title four times.

VI. Facilities

The School of Navigation has 18 learning laboratories, 1476 sets of instruments and equipment, with a total asset of 24.69 million yuan and a space of 4,516 square meters. At present, these labs are manned with seven faculty members. The main learning labs are as follows:

1. Navigation Simulation Laboratory

Navigation simulation laboratory which covers an area of 400 square meters with 134 sets of equipment and a total asset value of 5,141,600 yuan, serves the navigation technology, maritime management, law majors in the items of  (1) the test of turning parameters, (2) the head reach, (3) mooring and anchoring, (4) berthing and unberthing, turning in port, (5) emergency ship-handling, (6) the ship’s lights and shapes, (7) three situation in sight of one another, (8) conduct of vessels in restricted visibility, (9) bridge watch, (10) wheel steering.

2. Radar Simulation Laboratory

Radar simulation laboratory which covers an area of 162 square meters, with 101 sets of equipment and a total asset value of 2,152,500 yuan, is suitable for the navigation and maritime management majors in the items of (1) basic radar operation (simulator operation), (2) radar display and radar measurement, (simulator operation) (3) radar target tracking (simulator operation).

3. Marine Traffic Management Laboratory

Marine Traffic Management laboratory which covers an area of 108 square meters, with 118 equipment and a total asset value of 1.3876 million yuan, facilitates the navigation and maritime management majors in the learning of (1) VTS operation and application, (2) VTS communication and coordination, (3) VTS emergency handling.

4. Voyage plan laboratory

Voyage plan laboratory which covers an area of 108 square meters, with 72 equipment and a total asset value of 204,800 yuan, is for the activities of (1) chart reading and correction, (2) the use of sextant and index difference determination, (3) the determination of compass error, (4) ship positioning, (5) route design.

5. Meteorological Laboratory

The Meteorological laboratory which covers an area of 80 square meters, with 13 equipment and a total asset value of 7800 yuan, is exclusively for  (1) cloud identification, (2) observation of various meteorological elements, (3) reading and analysis of surface weather maps, (4) wave analysis maps, (5) reading of other weather maps.

Maritime English lab which is 140 square meters with 184 sets and a total asset value of 344,200 yuan, is for the training items of 1Basic Maritime Knowledge and Terms,2International Shipping and IMO,3Ship Orders,4Port Entry and Departure Communication.

GMDSS Simulation Lab which covers 216 square meters with 80 sets and a total asset value of 1.6886 million yuan, is for the simulator operation of 1INMARSAT system,2MF/HF radio equipment,3VHF sets,4MSI receiver,  (5) EPIRB and SART.

8. Shipboard Fire-fighting Laboratory

Shipboard Fire-fighting Laboratory covers an area of 300 square meters, with 82 sets of equipment and a total asset value of 603,700 yuan, is suitable for the drills of (1) fire prevention and extinguishing, (2) advanced fire-fighting on ships.

9. Shipboard Medical Laboratory

Shipboard medical laboratory which covers an area of 150 square meters, with 36 equipment and a total asset value of 143,800 yuan, is for the teaching of (1) first aid, (2) first aid proficiency (3)shipboard medical care.



10. Sailor Craft Laboratory

Sailor craft laboratory which covers an area of 300 square meters, with 97 equipment and a total asset value of 768,000 yuan is suitable for the learning of (1) Marine knots (2) braiding and splicing of three-strand rope (3) ship rope eye ring splicing (4) hull maintenance (5) heaving line (6) ship mooring equipment operation (7) ship loading and unloading equipment operation.



11. Aids to Navigation laboratory

Aids to navigation laboratory which covers an area of 220 square meters, with 48 sets of equipment and a total asset value of 1,025,300 yuan, assists the teaching and learning of (1) gyroscope’s structure and characteristics, (2) the structure, operation and maintenance of gyrocompass, (3) the structure, operation and maintenance of magnetic compass, (4) the operation and maintenance of marine echo sounder  and distance log, (5) the operation of GPS satellite navigation, (6) the operation of AIS, (7) the operation of VDR and LRIT.



12. Maritime Intelligent Traffic Information Laboratory

The Maritime Intelligent Traffic Information Laboratory which covers an area of 140 square meters and has 150 sets of equipment, with a total asset value of 1,635,900 yuan, serves the training of (1) electronic chart operation, (2) the operation and application of VTS system, (3) VTS communication and coordination, (4) VTS emergency handling.

The Waterborne Training Center which covers an area of 100 square meters and has 62 sets of equipment with a total asset value of 1,898,200 yuan serves the training of (1) survival at sea, (2) lifeboat and rescue craft familiarization (3) ship pollution prevention (4) ship security.

The Maritime Communications Lab which covers 216 square meters with 26 sets and a total asset value of 527,000 yuan, is for the simulator operation of 1INMARSAT system,2MF/HF radio equipment,3VHF sets,4MSI receiver,  (5) EPIRB and SART, (6) spoken nautical English.


15. Cargo Shipping Laboratory

The Cargo Shipping laboratory which covers an area of 100 square meters, with 109 equipment and a total asset value of 890,000 yuan, is for the teaching of  (1) developing cargo stowage plan, (2) stowage and securing of cargo unit, (3) developing bulk grain stowage plan.


16. Dynamic Positioning Laboratory

The Dynamic Positioning Laboratory which covers an area of 300 square meters and has 81 sets of equipment with a total asset value of 4.4861 million yuan, serves the navigation technology and maritime management in the items of  (1) the test of turning parameters, (2) the head reach, (3) mooring and anchoring, (4) berthing and unberthing, turning in port, (5) emergency ship-handling, (6) the ship’s lights and shapes, (7) three situation in sight of one another, (8) conduct of vessels in restricted visibility, (9) bridge watch, (10) dynamic positioning, (11)anchor operation, (12) wheel steering.

The Maritime Management and Legal Skills Laboratory is suitable for law and maritime management majors. It covers an area of 140 square meters, with 35 equipment and a total asset value of 695,700 yuan.

IV. Academic and Research

The School of Navigation has been focusing on the research of ship intelligent and safe navigation technology, marine traffic safety, implementation of international maritime conventions, maritime law etc. and striving to assist the construction of Guangzhou international shipping center, boost the "Belt and Road" initiative, the maritime power, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and other national and regional development strategies with adherence to demand-oriented, problem-oriented and feature-oriented scientific and technological innovation.

At present, the School of Navigation has one provincial engineering center and two maritime research platforms. The faculty members of the School have given full play to their professional expertise in the construction of wharfs, waterways, bridges, oil platforms and other water surface and underwater projects in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and completed more than 100 marine traffic safety assessment projects, including the assessment of traffic safety around Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The faculty members of the School have completed over 281 major provincial and national research projects and projects entrusted by enterprises, with a total research fund of 562.65 million yuan. The faculty members have obtained 11 patents, published more than 200 academic papers, and 6 textbooks.

The landmark achievements are as follows:

(1) Professor Sha Zhengrong's research group put forward two proposals to IMO in 2018 and 2019 respectively and both were adopted by the Organization, which highlighted China’s role in the international maritime world.

(2) The research results of "Research on the Bridge Water Area, Traffic Safety Management Regulations and Measures of the Main Project of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge" undertaken by our faculty members were adopted in the "Marine Traffic Safety Management Measures for Guangdong Waters of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge" issued by the People's Government of Guangdong Province in 2019.

(3) A number of awards have been obtained, such as "Research and Application of Water Traffic Safety Management Methods and Technologies in the Pearl River Estuary", which won the first prize of Science and Technology Progress of China Institute of Navigation in 2020; The paper "International Cooperation in Epidemic Prevention and Control from the Perspective of Logistics Supply Chain" won the third prize in 2020 National Deputy Provincial Cities Legal Forum; The textbook "International Freight Forwarding Practice" won the third prize of the 7th Wuhua Book Award by China Logistics Society and National Logistics Vocational Education Steering Committee.
