I. Overview

As a backbone college of Guangzhou Maritime University, School of Marine Engineering has a long history, which is the former Marine Engineering division, Guangzhou Marine School (1964 to 1992) and Marine engineering division, Guangzhou Maritime College (1992 to 2013). In 2013, Guangzhou Maritime College was upgraded to degree-awarding university by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and School of Marine Engineering was built subsequently.

School of Marine Engineering includes Marine Engineering Teaching & Research Section, Marine Electric Automatization Teaching & Research Section, Marine Engineering Experimental Center, Marine Intelligent Monitoring & Simulation Center, Intelligent Energy-saving Seamless Power Supply Technology Development Center for Ships Berthing in Port, Marine New Energy Basic Research Center and other teaching and scientific research institutions.

On the basis of long-term teaching and scientific research, five distinctive disciplines have been set up consisting of modern marine engineering management, marine electronics & electrical control engineering, ship energy-saving & environmental protection engineering, new energy science & engineering and engineering material for deep sea.

The school has two undergraduate majors: Marine engineering and electronic electrical engineering among which there are four professional emphases. The school recruits students from 25 provinces and cities across the country and students are semi-militarized. The school is currently made up of a strong and experienced teaching faculty with totally 42 members, among whom are 5 professors,11 vice professors, 4 Senior Chief Engineers, 1 Yangtze River Scholar and 1 Thousand Oversea Talents Scheme Scholar. The proportion of lecturers who have a working experience on board ship is 50%, and 80% lecturers possess MA degrees or MA diplomas. The teachers' team is reasonable in structure, age structure, and professional title and so on.

The school has a good professional experiment and practice conditions. It is equipped with advanced turbine simulator, turbine engine room automation integrated laboratory, ship new energy laboratory and other campus practice base, which meet the requirements of the teaching and training. At the same time, the school also cooperate with many shipping companies, shipyards, off-campus practice base. The school has the cooperative project with China shipping bulk carrier co., LTD in building four training ships named "An Huashan", "An Longshan", "An Yushan", "An Chengshan".

The engineering teachers of School of Marine Engineering have high teaching level and strong scientific research ability. In the recent 4 years, the professional full-time teachers have participated in more than 70 various types of scientific researches, teaching and research projects including “Efficient Energy Utilization Technology Research and Development on Vessels in Ports Based on High-power UPS Innovation Platform", "Teaching Experiment System of Turbine Virtual Engine Room Automation Platform”,etc. among which there are 20 provincial departmental level researches, 3 representative transfer or adoption of scientific researches, 100 patents, 20 million RMB scientific research funds; teachers have published 114 papers, and there are totally 7 authored or co-authored textbooks and 5 excellent teaching achievement awards.

The school has been serving the shipping industry and regional economy and has sent a lot of talents and provide perfect seafarers’ training to the society. A large number of graduates are key employees in the shipping industry, shipyards and other industries. The graduates' employment rate has been up to 95% and the professionalism of the graduates are highly appreciated by the employers.

II. Undergraduate Programs

The school has two undergraduate majors: Marine Engineering and Marine Electrical Engineering. These two majors share a common goal of cultivating students with capability and integrity, as well as leadership and citizenship.

Marine Engineering Program is dedicated to the cultivation of all-rounded talents that meet the standard of international and national seafarers’ competency and possess the quality of international competitiveness with a solid foundation of professional knowledge in Mechanics, Marine System and etc. And it is aimed to equip students with excellent abilities in ship turbine control and maintenance, ship electrical equipment maintenance and management, ship supervision and ship building supervision, ship inspection and related scientific research and teaching work, etc.

Electronic and Electrical Marine Engineering Programs is dedicated to the cultivation of advanced practical personnel that meet the standard of development in all-round and specified in the international maritime organization STCW convention "electrical, electronic and control engineering", "maintenance and repair" and "ship and the ship operation personnel management" and other functional requirements, having knowledge of electrical manufacturing and maintenance of ship electronics, be able to work in electronics, electrical engineering, automation, computer control etc.


III. Faculty

Yin Yansheng

Professor, doctoral supervisor, Yangtze River Scholar. In 1999, he received special government allowance from the State Council and in 2004, he was appointed as Yangtze River Scholar by the Ministry of Education. He has been engaged in basic research and engineering application of materials for a long time focusing on the marine engineering fields i.e. material preparation and processing technology, marine environmental service behavior and microbial attachment and fouling mechanism, multi factor coupling failure mechanism and protection in the process of deep-sea oil drilling and production. He has successively undertaken more than 30 national, provincial and municipal important research projects.

Teng Xianbin

Professor / Senior Chief Engineer, Dean of School of Marine Engineering. Senior member of China Society of navigation, member of the editorial board of Ship Engineering, member of the editorial board of China Navigation 2015, member of the National Shipbuilding Industry Teaching Directing Committee, member of the National Transportation Vocational Education and Teaching Directing Committee .

Ye Weiqiang

Professor, Vice Dean of School of Marine Engineering. He gave lectures on marine automation, marine simulator, marine English and introduction to marine engineering, presided over and participated in 13 scientific research projects. In 2014, he won the second prize of the national teaching achievement award and was rated as an excellent educator in 2012.

Xiao Leming

Professor, Director of Technology Development Center of University in Guangdong and director of the Institute of Marine Engineering. In 2003, his courses were rated as one of the first 50 excellent courses in colleges and universities in Guangdong Province and as a provincial excellent open course in 2013. He is directing the technology development center for smart energy-saving seamless power supply engineering of vessels in ports in Colleges and universities of Guangdong Province and the key projects of Applied Science and technology Project of Guangdong in 2016. He won 25 awards for scientific research and teaching achievements, and was rated as a famous teacher of our university in 2007.

Lu Jinlin

Distinguished professor of Liaoning Province and doctoral supervisor , candidate for the "Hundred Million Talents Project" of Liaoning Province, excellent teacher of Baosteel, member of Metallurgical Physical Chemistry Committee of China Metallurgical Association, member of New Energy Materials Development Committee of China Society of Nonferrous Metals, member of Molten Salt Chemistry and Technology Committee of China Metallurgical Association, and serves as the editorial board of Current Alternative Energy. He graduated from Nanyang University of technology in Singapore with a doctoral degree and his main research interests are new energy electrochemical materials and metal corrosion & protection. So far, he has published more than 50 academic papers in SCI Journals.


Shen Weilin

Senior chief engineer,Vice Dean of School of Marine Engineering. He is awarded as outstanding educator in Guangdong, famous teachers at school level. He won the second prize of national teaching achievement award and the first prize of Guangdong teaching achievement award and was in charge of provincial high-quality courses.

Zhang Zhibin

Associate professor, Deputy Party Secretary of School of Marine Engineering. He graduated from Jimei University in 2008 and obtained a master's degree in marine engineering. He was a visiting scholar of South China University of technology from September 2016 to September 2017. Since 2015, he has studied for an on-the-job doctor at Dalian Maritime University. In recent years, he has published several papers in core journals, presided over and participated in a number of scientific research projects.

Bi Qilin

Doctor, associate professor. He graduated from South China University of technology in 2014 and obtained a doctorate in mechanical engineering and automation; In 2015, he engaged in postdoctoral research in the Institute of intelligent manufacturing, Guangdong Academy of Sciences. He is a member of China Computer Society and a member of the Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

IV. Facilities

Marine Engineering Experimental Center is affiliated with the School of Marine Engineering, Guangzhou Maritime University (GMU), which covers an area of 2700 square meters with about RMB 15 million Yuan of assets. Marine Engineering Experimental Center Consists of Marine Virtual Simulation Laboratory, Marine Automatic Engine Room Laboratory, Marine Engineering Automatization Laboratory, Integrated Marine simulation Operation Laboratory, Marine Diesel Engine Disassembling Laboratory, Marine Engineering Simulator Laboratory, Marine Auxiliary Machinery Operation Laboratory, Marine Auxiliary Machinery Disassembling Laboratory, Marine Diesel Engine and Generator Set Laboratory, Marine Engineering English Training Laboratory, Liquid Cargo Ship Laboratory, Marine New Energy Laboratory and other professional laboratory. These diversified laboratories mainly undertake undergraduate experimental teaching tasks for Marine Engineering Major, Marine Electronic & Electrical Engineering Major , and also undertake assessment tasks of training and evaluation for Oceangoing Seafarers.

The establishing Marine Engineering Experimental center meets the experimental teaching requirements of students majored in Marine Engineering technology and Marine Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and also meets the requirements of the Manila Amendments of the STCW Convention and the national maritime bureau. In addition, it can meet the requirement of shipping enterprises about special training course for advancing career Marine Engineers and Electronic & Electrical Officer (ETO).
