I. Overview

Department of Sports Science, established on May 2016, is responsible for student physical education and scientific research, sports training and competitions, extracurricular physical exercises, college students' physical fitness testing and management, stadium management and external services. There are 35 faculty members, among which are 2 professors, 6 associate professors, 13 lecturers; 1 with doctor degree and 14 with master degree; 2 school-level excellent teachers. The department sets two teaching and research rooms respectively for nautical sports classes and optional sports courses, and five centers separately for sports venue management, National Student Physical Health Standards testing, sports training and competitions, student sports club guidance, and nautical sports research. Since its establishment, it has adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics For a New Era and the education philosophy of putting health first, promoted the coordinated development of literacy studies and physical exercises of our students, and helped students to enjoy fun, enhance their physical fitness, improve their personality, temper their will in physical exercises, positively contributing to cultivating socialist builders and successors with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical conditions, mind status and community service ability. In 2019, the department was awarded the honorary title of Excellent Teaching institution and Advanced Grassroots Party Organization for the 2018-2019 academic year.




In order to implement documents including Opinions on Comprehensively Strengthening and Improving School Sports Work in the New Era issued by the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the General Office of the State Council and Opinions on Deepening the Integration of Sports and Education to Promote the Healthy Development of Adolescents issued by the General Administration of Sports and the Ministry of Education, the department, in accordance with the sports model of one school with multiple features, combines with the school-running characteristics and focuses on sports courses closely related to sailing vocational education comprising dragon boats, orienteering and swimming, forming the sailing characteristics of sports in our university; according to the physical education curriculum teaching model of Health Knowledge plus Basic Sports Skills plus Special Sports Skills, the department innovates and reforms the physical teaching methods, actively carries out the integration of sports and education and ideological curriculum construction, strengthening sports competitions and campus sports culture construction so as to consolidate the education function of sports.

II. Curriculum

According to the schooling conditions and talent training goals of our university, curriculum construction was carried out. In majors related to navigation, nautical sports classes are set up combined with the characteristics of vocational skills. The teaching content mainly includes 16 programs which are related to roller, wave wood, spiral ladder, rope climbing, pole climbing, rope ladder, dragon boat, kayaking, paddle board, breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke, and snorkeling, practical swimming, practical diving; There are also various optional sports courses for non-navigation majors,which involves 26 programs including football, basketball, volleyball, air volleyball, badminton, table tennis, tennis, orienteering, swimming, dragon boat, aerobics , Sports dance, fitness and fitness, body training, hip-hop, boxing and Sanda, Changquan, Tai Chi, Tai Chi sword, Tai Chi fan, elementary sword, Nanquan, Taekwondo, Yoga, Shuttlecock, Chinese style fitness dance. Besides, the department also offers general elective courses of mental health for all registered students, which mainly include sports and health, sports culture and appreciation, exercise prescription, physical beauty and shaping, etc.. The small ball module, a sports course set both for nautical majors and as sports optional one, is a school-level excellent resource sharing curriculum; sports culture and appreciation are constructed as a school-level high-quality curriculum; Moreover, sports dance is an online open course.




III. Sports culture construction on campus

Sports competitions are vigorously carried out. Twelve school-level sports teams in dragon boat, orienteering, football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, swimming, track and field, martial arts, aerobics, and sports dance have been formed. Apart from carrying out after-school training in a rational method, the department actively participates in various college student sports competitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the State Sports General Administration, the Provincial Department of Education, the Provincial Sports Bureau and other relevant watchdogs of Guangzhou City. Since 2016, it has won 241 awards totally, among which are 39 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 28 bronze medals; 4 star prizes, 6 first prizes, 9 second prizes, and 5 third prizes. It is also worth noticing that in the 10th Guangdong University Sports Meeting ended on May 31, 2019, we won the third prize concerning the A team group total score and the sportsmanship award. The Olympic spirit is fully promoted through sports competitions, utterly demonstrated the running level of our university, thus raising its reputation.




Campus sports culture featuring sunny, healthy, and hardworking is cultivated. The campus sports cultural festival is organized every year, and the activities include table tennis, badminton, football, basketball, volleyball, orienteering, aerobics, martial arts competitions for college students and sports culture exhibitions; Whats more, water sports game, track and field and fun games are also held, and the participation rate of students has reached over 50%. It has not only strengthened students' physique, enlivened campus life, but also cultivated students' patriotism and collectivism.
